The nurse’s cap has undergone several changes throughout the centuries. The origin of the cap was the habit that nuns wore.Several styles were fashioned after a nun’s veil and they were commonly known as “dust or muffin”caps. The caps covered most of a nurse’s head and hair. The handkerchief hat replaced the muffin caps, and it was much easier to clean and wear.Graduate nurses wore the cap at their graduation ceremony. These caps were mass- produced and eliminated the need to make a cap from a handkerchief. The caps were made of paper so they could be disposable. With the increasing number of men in the nursing profession, the nurse’s cap has been replaced by nusing scrubs.Nurse’s caps were no longer part of the standard uniform around 1971.In order to continue displaying their alma mater, the educational institutions began awarding their graducates with a nursing pin. There was no need to worry about the care and the cleaning of the cap.The pins gave them a sense of pride and identification. At the same time,it was able to display their education and school with ease.
Even though caps are not required ,some medical facilities still allow them to be a part of the uniform as an optional piece.
